Dr. Eric J. Coontz, DDS, MS

Dr. Coontz has practiced in New Mexico since the 1980s. He received his DDS from the Loyola University School of Dentistry, then served as a general dentist for the US Army. After serving in the Army, he has worked in both private practice and public service, most recently retiring from the Veterans Administration in 2015.

Although he has been a practicing dentist, he has not stopped his dental education, achieving a Master of Science in Oral Biology and getting certified in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) using oral appliances.

First Hand Experience with Sleep Apnea

Dr. Coontz isn’t just a sleep dentist, he’s also a sleep apnea sufferer who knows how hard it can be to get successful treatment. After experiencing a heart attack in 2013 caused in part by sleep apnea, Dr. Coontz has struggled to find the proper sleep apnea treatment, trying CPAP, BIPAP, and VPAP, as well as 15 different masks and at least five different oral appliances.

He puts this experience to work trying to maximize the experience and results for his patients.

Comprehensive Sleep Apnea Treatment

Dr. Coontz knows that successful sleep apnea treatment is about more than just opening the airway. That’s why he’s incorporated heart rate variability monitoring and electromyography into his oral appliance process. This helps ensure that oral appliances achieve the most important end goal of sleep apnea treatment: overall wellness.

He also has acquired an i-CAT Cone Beam CT scanner, which can perform a volumetric analysis of the airway. In addition, the CT scanner provides highly diagnostic radiographs of the temporomandibular joint and the cranial-cervical structures in general. All radiographs are interpreted by a board certified oral and maxillofacial radiologist.

Dr. Coontz now uses the Fotona Lightwalker ATS laser to modify the soft palate and uvula to reduce snoring and increase the opening to the oral airway. This is a non-cutting and non-invasive procedure that shrinks the inflamed soft tissue, restoring it to its normal state. This procedure is known as Nightlase and has been shown to benefit patients greatly.

NuCalm plays a very important role in this process. First, it can help patients to relax during their dental appointment. Since the dentist’s office is often very stressful for patients, it can be hard to get a good, natural reading for fitting their oral appliance. But with NuCalm, that’s easy.

And the benefits of stress relief go beyond the fitting appointment. It helps patients to start using their oral appliance when they’re set up for optimal, quality sleep . This normalizes the process of adding an oral appliance to their normal nighttime routine.

NuCalm’s anti-inflammatory process and ability to encourage parasympathetic nervous system dominance help to ensure a healthy airway and good breathing techniques. They also help patients to achieve wellness through sleep apnea treatment by countering muscle tension and psychological stress related to sleep apnea.
