Measuring Anxiety and Depression
This study, published September 11 in the Annals of Depression and Anxiety, looked at 100 subjects who were shown to have either depression or anxiety symptoms.
Chronic anxiety and depression are mental states, but they have measurable consequences for your body. When you are feeling anxiety and depression, your body is in a state of sympathetic nervous system dominance. In other words, the part of your involuntary nervous system that prepares your body for its fight-or-flight response.
We can measure the state of the body’s preparations in many ways. In this study, researchers picked three variables to represent the body’s stress level: galvanic skin resistance (GSR), electroencephalogram (EEG) measurement of brain waves, and heart rate variability (HRV). Subjects had all these values taken at baseline and then during half hour of treatment with NuCalm.
Reducing Anxiety on the Surface
GSR measures the ability of the skin to conduct electricity. Normally, the skin has a fairly high resistance to electricity–it’s good insulation. But when we are stressed, our body triggers sweat glands in anticipation of needing to cool off after vigorous activity. Sweat is water with electrolytes in it, and it conducts electricity really well. So, the more sweat on the skin, the lower the resistance. Normal values for this test are in the range of 100-700 kOhm.
The 100 subjects in this study had an average value of 61 kOhm, significantly below average. However, while under NuCalm, skin resistance increased dramatically, to an average of 420 kOhm, right in the middle of the normal range!
Bringing the Brainwaves Together
One of the components of NuCalm is the neuroacoustic software which uses the body’s frequency following response to harmonize brainwaves. Synchronous brainwaves not only show relaxation, but help the brain get ready for learning.
In this study, measurements showed that subjects had relatively low brainwave activity before treatment, with delta wave values between 1 and 2.7 microvolts, alpha wave ranging from 1.3 to 5 microvolts, and theta wave ranging from 2 to 5 microvolts. But with NuCalm stimulation delta waves increased to 22 microvolts, alpha waves increased to 25 microvolts, and theta waves increased to 21 microvolts. In addition, synchronization values nearly doubled.
Researchers found that initially subjects had a high degree of HRV. HRV is considered a measure of sympathetic nervous system dominance, expressed in the ratio LF/HF (low frequency power divided by high frequency power). The higher the ratio, the more the sympathetic nervous system dominates. For the 100 test subjects, the initial LF/HF was 4.71. During NuCalm, the LF/HF ratio dropped to 0.99.
