Stress, it seems, is omnipresent in modern life. And for most of us the majority of our stress comes from our jobs. So, if you’re trying to cut down on stress in your life, maybe you should consider switching to one of these least stressful jobs
How Stressfulness Was Rated
The job rating was performed by job website CareerCast (though Forbes rebranded the list). It’s important to understand how the jobs were rated to know whether the rating system is likely to be accurate for you.
For their rating, CareerCast looked at 11 criteria to determine the stressfulness of a job, including:
- Career growth potential
- Physical demands
- Environmental conditions
- Hazards encountered
- Meeting the public
- Risk of death or grievous injury
- Immediate risk of another’s life
- Working in the public eye
For their system, more of any of the above was considered more stressful. More travel is considered more stressful than little to no travel, and more growth opportunity is considered more stressful, for example. They also didn’t take salary into account when rating jobs.
Many people may not agree with this. While a high degree of business travel can definitely be grueling, some people appreciate a moderate amount of travel in their job. And while some people think low growth makes a job low-stress, others may be stressed because they feel trapped in a dead-end job. And a low-paying job can definitely multiply your stress outside the office.
At any rate, the people from CareerCast looked at 200 different careers and picked out the ten they considered to be the least stressful.
The Least Stressful Jobs
Based on their criteria, here are the ten least stressful jobs, with their stress score (SS) and median annual pay (MP):
- Medical laboratory technician SS: 10.31 MP: $50,550
- Pharmacy technician SS: 9.1 MP $30,410
- Operations research analyst SS: 9.02 MP: $78,630
- Jeweler SS: 8.95 MP: $37,060
- Medical records technician SS: 8.57 MP: $37,110
- Tenured university professor SS: 8.17 MP: $72,470
- Audiologist SS: 7.31 $74,890
- Hair stylist SS: 6.71 MP: $23,710
- Compliance officer SS: 5.73 MP: $65,640
- Diagnostic medical sonographer SS: 4.00 MP $63,630
There are definitely some stress bargains on the list. Especially the number one least stressful job. That’s a lot of income for a low amount of stress, compared to hair stylist, which has more stress at only a fraction of the pay!
